Hi, I’m Ryan. I got licensed in 2026 and went from Technician to Amateur Extra in about five weeks, which says less about talent than about how much I enjoy a well-defined set of rules and a test at the end of them.
By day I build systems: databases, reports, the occasional web app, and a lot of automation that quietly keeps an operation honest. By night, and too many weekends, I’m on the public-safety side of things, where the radio is the job and nobody cares how clean your audio is as long as the message gets through.
Why ham radio
It was a convergence. Years of public-safety radio made me curious about everything on either side of the channels I was allowed to touch. My day job made me want to automate whatever I found there. And I wanted something the family could do together that didn’t involve a screen, or at least involved a screen with a waterfall on it.
Ham radio turned out to be all three. It rewards tinkering, it rewards reading the manual, and it comes with a century of history attached. This call sign alone has nearly a hundred years of it.
What you’ll find here
The station as it gets built, writeups of projects worth sharing, and the occasional piece of original research. If we’ve worked each other, thanks for looking me up. 73.
